Home Automation FAQ
What’s the difference between a Smart Home and a Home Automation System?
A Smart Home and a Home Automation System is basically the same thing. Early on our industry referred to it as a Home Automation System because the electronics would automate different systems and make them work together. For example, the push of a button on a remote could turn your TV and Surround System on, turn down the lights, adjust the thermostat to a more comfortable temperature, and start a movie. That was an automated process.
As more products became “smarter” meaning that they could connect to the internet and communicate with other devices, the term Smart Home became something more familiar to consumers.
We typically find that customers asking for a “Smart Home” are usually looking for smart electronics devices to be installed throughout their home. Those looking for a “Home Automation System” are oftentimes looking for a more complete system that is controlling more items throughout their home. Both terms can be used interchangeably.
What kind of Home Automation system is the best?
As with anything, everyone has their personal preference on what is the “best”. There are many good brands on the market that are made to be designed, installed, and programmed by a professional Technology Company such as Digital Systems and Integration. What we found is that it comes down to the quality of training and support that the manufacturers provide. For that reason, we have chosen to partner with Control 4, Savant, and RTI. We have found that those 3 manufacturers offer a good mix of products, support, and price points that allow for us to do systems from small to large.
We also sell several Smart Home products that work with Control 4, Savant, and RTI or by themselves. With our mix of Smart Home and Home Automation Solutions, we have something to help a very broad range of clients for both Residential and Commercial applications.
How much does a Smart Home Automation System cost?
A Smart Home Automation System can vary in price depending on the size of your home, the things you would like to control such as thermostats, home audio, lighting, and more. At Digital Systems and Integration, we work with each client to better understand their needs and budget. We have helped our customers with Smart Home devices starting at just a few thousand dollars for the parts and installation and have customers who have spent over $250,000 for everything. That’s why we like to speak with every customer so we can better understand your needs.
How long does a Home Automation System last?
Just like with any electronics, it can be difficult to predict how long they will last. We chose the best Home Automation brands such as Control 4, Savant, and RTI which come with between a 1-year and 5-year warranty on the hardware, depending on the brand and product. We have seen systems lasting over 10 years, however, keep in mind that technology changes often. The older systems will likely be missing some of the new features and capabilities of the newer systems. Sometimes these can be updated with just software, but often it’s best to upgrade when that time comes. We suggest updating your electronics every 5-years for those who want to stay current, however, some exceptions apply and we will only recommend an update if it will help our customers achieve their goals.
We also offer service plans which can help cover some of the labor cost should something go wrong with the equipment either inside or outside of the manufacturer’s warranty period.
Why Do We Need Smart Homes?
Home automation makes your home more convenient, and coordinates different systems together. Set your thermostat, turn off all the lights, and arm your security system when you leave for work. Or you can start warming the pool and play music in the backyard with a single button. We’re only limited by our imagination. Used regularly, a home automation system will save you an incredible amount of time every day, help you be more efficient while going about daily tasks, and reduce energy use.
